President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s administration has been on a transformative journey since 2017, leaving an indelible mark on Zimbabwe’s infrastructure and economic landscape. As the leader of the “Crocodile Movement,” Mnangagwa has overseen numerous projects aimed at revitalizing the country’s economy, improving the lives of its citizens, and propelling Zimbabwe towards a brighter future.
Infrastructure Development: Laying the Foundation
One of Mnangagwa’s major achievements is the development of Zimbabwe’s infrastructure. The construction of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport expansion is currently underway, which will increase the airport’s capacity and improve the country’s connectivity to the rest of the world. This modernization effort will not only enhance the travel experience but also increase trade and tourism opportunities.
In addition to airport upgrades, the government has also invested heavily in road infrastructure. The rehabilitation of major highways, such as the Harare-Beitbridge and Harare-Chirundu roads, has improved road safety and reduced travel times. Furthermore, the construction of new roads, like the Makuti-Chirundu and Karoi-Binga roads, has opened up previously inaccessible areas, promoting economic growth and development.
Power Generation: Illuminating the Future
To address Zimbabwe’s energy challenges, Mnangagwa’s administration has prioritized power generation. The Hwange Thermal Power Station expansion, which added 600 megawatts to the national grid, has significantly improved power supply. Additionally, the construction of new power plants, such as the Kariba South Hydroelectric Power Station extension, has increased Zimbabwe’s energy output.
The development of renewable energy sources has also been a key focus area. The construction of solar power plants, like the 100-megawatt Gwanda Solar Project, has not only reduced Zimbabwe’s reliance on fossil fuels but also created new opportunities for energy exports.
Dam Construction: Harnessing the Power of Water
To improve water supply and irrigation, the government has invested in dam construction. The completion of the Lake Gwayi-Shangani Dam has increased water supply to Bulawayo and surrounding areas. Furthermore, the construction of new dams, like the Tugwi-Mukosi Dam, has improved irrigation facilities, boosting agricultural production and food security.
Border Modernization: Enhancing Trade and Security
To facilitate trade and improve security, Mnangagwa’s administration has modernized several border posts. The upgrading of the Beitbridge Border Post, one of Africa’s busiest border crossings, has reduced congestion and improved the efficiency of trade. Similar upgrades at other border posts, such as Chirundu and Plumtree, have also enhanced trade facilitation and security.
