OPINION – In recent days, it has been both unfortunate and disheartening to witness unfounded criticisms directed at Zimbabwe’s Vice President, General (Retired) Dr Constantino Chiwenga. Some of these accusations—ranging from mischaracterisations to outright distortions—have even sought to question his loyalty to His Excellency, President Emmerson Mnangagwa. Such claims are not only baseless, but represent a clear misreading of both history and character.
General Chiwenga’s loyalty has never been in doubt. His service to the nation spans decades, defined not only by the high office he currently holds, but by the depth of his sacrifice and commitment to Zimbabwe. From the liberation struggle to his decisive role in safeguarding national stability in 2017, he has consistently placed the interests of the country—and its leadership—above personal gain. That moment in history, where courage and principle were paramount, remains a testament to his selfless dedication and enduring patriotism.
But Vice President Chiwenga’s contribution extends beyond historic political milestones. On a deeply personal level, he has faced significant health challenges—battles that would have sidelined many. Yet, despite such trials, he continues to serve the nation with humility, resolve, and military precision. His resilience in the face of adversity exemplifies the qualities of an unwavering public servant—disciplined, focused, and committed to duty.
Critics who attempt to misrepresent his firm stance against corruption and criminal cartels as political disloyalty fundamentally misunderstand his mission. On the contrary, this principled stand aligns seamlessly with President Mnangagwa’s vision for a modern, transparent, and accountable Zimbabwe. Corruption remains one of the biggest threats to national progress, and the Vice President’s willingness to confront it head-on reflects not betrayal, but courage—a courage rooted in loyalty to the President and the national interest.
History offers the clearest testimony. Loyalty is not measured by public declarations or fleeting rhetoric, but by consistent, courageous action. Vice President Chiwenga’s record, built over years of service and sacrifice, speaks volumes. His actions are not shaped by personal ambition but by a deep commitment to Zimbabwe’s sovereignty, peace, and prosperity.
He remains not only one of the President’s most trusted lieutenants but also a pillar of national leadership. His unwavering support for the Head of State, his commitment to clean governance, and his resilience in the face of adversity render him an indispensable figure in the country’s ongoing journey of transformation.
Those who seek to sow discord by targeting the Vice President are, in effect, attempting to destabilise the leadership structure and preserve a system that benefits from corruption and division. Such efforts must be firmly rejected.
As a nation, Zimbabwe must remain focused on unity, development, and reform. In Vice President Chiwenga, the country has a leader who embodies loyalty, sacrifice, and service—not in words, but in verifiable deeds. His legacy continues to be one of disciplined leadership, unwavering patriotism, and an unshakable commitment to both President Mnangagwa and the people of Zimbabwe.
