Where Heroes Rest, New Heroes Rise: Kangausaru Inspires Hurungwe East Through Sport and Hope

By Cimba Shepherd Nhamo

TENGWE, HURUNGWE EAST — The rolling fields of Tengwe Country Club came alive on 11–12 August 2025 with the chants of soccer fans, the cheers of netball supporters, and the laughter of children. The occasion was the 2nd Dan Maendaenda Kangausaru Heroes Tournament, a vibrant celebration of unity, heritage, and hope.

At the heart of this gathering stood Honourable Pastor Chenjerai Kangausaru, Member of Parliament for Hurungwe East. Together with his wife, he sponsored and championed the tournament, not only to honour Zimbabwe’s liberation heroes but also to inspire today’s youth to rise against drugs and substance abuse.

“True leadership is not about distance—it’s about walking with your people.”

To the people of Hurungwe East, Honourable Kangausaru is not a distant politician. He is a leader who walks, talks, and runs with his community. At Tengwe, he was not confined to the podium—he was on the ground, clapping for teams, chatting with parents, and offering words of encouragement to young players.

This closeness is what defines his leadership. “Honourable is like a father to our children,” said one villager during the awards ceremony. “He doesn’t just speak to us—he speaks with us.”

“Every goal scored is a dream awakened, every match played is a step away from drugs.”

If there is one cause that drives Honourable Kangausaru, it is the empowerment of the youth. He sees their energy and creativity as the backbone of Hurungwe East’s future. Through sport, he gives them a platform to shine, to compete, and to believe in themselves.

But his support extends far beyond the pitch. Whenever he has a chance—at schools, churches, or community gatherings—he speaks directly to young people. His message is clear and heartfelt: reject drugs, pursue education, and build a life of dignity and hope.

“He does not just condemn—he counsels, he listens, he heals.”

The scourge of drugs and substance abuse is tearing communities apart across Zimbabwe. Honourable Kangausaru has made it his mission to fight this crisis through both practical initiatives and spiritual guidance.

On the field, he creates opportunities for sport as a healthy alternative to drugs. Off the field, he counsels, advises, and listens to young people struggling with addiction. His approach is not only firm but compassionate, rooted in his dual role as both pastor and legislator.

By tying the tournament to the theme “Say No to Drugs & Substance Abuse,” Honourable Kangausaru turned every goal scored and every netball point won into a statement of defiance against drugs—and a pledge of hope for the future.

“Behind every strong leader is a stronger family.”

Behind Honourable Kangausaru’s community leadership stands a strong family foundation. His wife, who co-sponsored the Heroes Tournament, is more than a partner in life—she is a pillar of strength in his mission.

He has often acknowledged that her encouragement fuels his work, enabling him to serve with energy and resilience. To the people of Hurungwe East, the Kangausarus are not just leaders—they are family, setting an example of unity, partnership, and service.

“Our heroes fought for freedom. Today, our fight is for the soul of our youth.”

The choice to host the tournament during Heroes Day commemorations gave it deep symbolic meaning. As Zimbabwe paused to honour the liberation heroes who secured the nation’s independence, Honourable Kangausaru reminded his constituency that every generation has its own battle to fight.

“For our heroes, the struggle was for freedom,” he told the crowd. “For us today, the struggle is against drugs, against hopelessness, and against division. Together, we will win.”

He is not just an MP—he is a mentor, a pastor, and a father to his people.”

Born in Karoi in 1968, Honourable Pastor Chenjerai Kangausaru has dedicated his life to service—whether in Parliament, in the pulpit, or in his community. His advocacy for youth empowerment, his compassion in counselling, and his leadership in fighting drugs reflect a man driven by vision and faith.

As the final whistle blew at Tengwe Country Club, and medals were awarded to jubilant players, one truth shone through the celebrations: Hurungwe East has a leader who is not only shaping policy but also shaping lives.

In Honourable Kangausaru, the community sees more than a Member of Parliament. They see a mentor, a father figure, and a servant-leader who is determined to ensure that where heroes rest, new heroes will rise.
